About Rhode Island’s State Flower: The Violet — A Petite Emblem with Deep Roots
Rhode Island’s state flower, the violet (Viola sororia), was first chosen by schoolchildren in 1897 during an Arbor Day vote.
Though long cherished, it wasn’t officially adopted until 1968, making Rhode Island the last state to name a state flower. Today, the violet’s delicate purple blooms symbolize the state’s quiet beauty and connection to the land.
